Things to know for the students working in China 

To work as a student, you must get an internship visa approved by an authorized educational institution. Here's a step-by-step guide to applying for a visa. 

  1. Contact the Chinese university where you intend to study; they will give you with instructions. 
  2. Fill out the internship visa application. The firm where you will intern must sign, stamp, and present its business license to your institution. 
  3. Once you have completed your visa paperwork and they have been authorized by your university, send them to your city's public security agency. 
  4. Pay an application fee of around 400 RMB (US $56). 
  5. Collect your internship visa after 5 to 7 working days. A new internship visa will be issued in place of your student visa. 

You are not permitted to work in any other companies than those listed on your visa. When you have an internship visa, you are permitted to get paid.

Working hours for international student   

To work part-time in China, student visa holders (X1 visa) are required to obtain approval from their host Chinese university as well as the Chinese immigration authorities. The following actions must be taken to get authorization for working a part-time job: 

  • Make an application to your host Chinese institution for permission to work part-time. 
  • You will include a certificate from your prospective employer/company with your application. 
  • Your hosting institution will transmit your application for part-time job authorization to the immigration authorities and request their recorded official consent. 
  • Obtain a consent letter from your Chinese host institution. 
  • Visit the nearest Chinese police station to your house and get your Chinese resident permit tagged with 'Part Time Work.' 
  • During semesters, you will be permitted to work 20 hours a week part-time, and during semester breaks, you will be permitted to work full-time. 
  • You cannot change employers often in China for part-time work, so make sure the job you have chosen is of interest to you and offers a reasonable wage. 

International students are only permitted to work-study for a total of 8 hours per week and 40 hours per month with a cap of 44 hours in a week, both on and off campus. No more than 16 hours each week and no more than 80 hours each month throughout the winter and summer holidays. 

The minimum wage in China 

The legal minimum wage, according to China's Minimum Wage Provisions, that the minimal labor payment that employers must pay to employees under the condition that the worker has provided labor within the working hours of prescribable labor contracts. 

Provincial governments set minimum wage standards based on factors such as the minimum living costs of local employees and their dependents, the urban residents' consumption price index, the social insurance premiums and housing funds paid by the employees themselves, the employees' average salary, the level of local economic development, the local employment status, and so on. 

Of the 31 provinces, Shanghai now has the highest monthly minimum salary (RMB 2,590, or US$400), while Beijing has the highest hourly minimum wage (RMB 25, or US$3.9). Shanghai, Guangdong, Beijing, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hubei, and Zhejiang have all achieved the RMB 2,000 (US$308) monthly minimum wage benchmark.
