Geography and Best places in the USA

The third-largest country in the world, the United States, is a vast nation. There is a wide variety of landscapes within such a big area. Geography is the study of places, their relationships with one another, and the inhabitants who call them home. With one island state and several island territories, the United States makes up a sizable portion of the North American continent. Canada forms its northern border. The longest international border is between the US and Canada. The Atlantic Ocean forms its eastern boundary. Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico are to the south of the United States. The US-Mexico border is recognized for being formed by the Rio Grande River in about half. Lastly, the Pacific Ocean is located on the western coast.

The northeast, midwest, south, and west are the country's four main geographical areas. Groups of locations that are similar to one another are called regions. The smallest section, the northeast, is entirely contained inside the country's northeastern portion and borders Canada. The northern and eastern center regions of the country are where you'll find the midwest region. The northeast and midwest regions are directly south of the south region. The largest region is the west, which includes all the areas to the west of the midwest and south.

Climate:

Most regions are temperate, but Hawaii and Florida are tropical, Alaska is arctic, the great plains west of the Mississippi River are semiarid, and the Great Basin of the southwest is arid. Low winter temperatures in the northwest are occasionally alleviated in January and February by warm chinook winds from the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

Terrain:

Territorial features include a vast middle plain, mountains in the west, hills and low mountains in the east, rough mountains and wide river valleys in Alaska, and a rough, volcanic landscape in Hawaii.

Natural Resources:

Coal, copper, lead, molybdenum, phosphates, rare earth elements, uranium, bauxite, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, potash, silver, tungsten, zinc, petroleum, natural gas, and lumber are examples of natural resources.

Note: With 491 billion short tons, or 27% of global reserves, the US has the highest coal reserves in the world.

Natural hazards include:

Landslides in California, forest fires in the west, flooding, permafrost in northern Alaska, a significant barrier to development, tsunamis, volcanoes, earthquake activity in the Pacific Basin, hurricanes along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts, tornadoes in the Midwest and Southeast, and hurricanes.

  • Volcanism: The Hawaiian Islands, Western Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northern Mariana Islands have all experienced volcanic activity. Mount Rainier (4,392 m) in Washington and Mauna Loa (4,170 m) in Hawaii have both been particularly active and designated Decade Volcanoes by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior because of their explosive pasts and proximity to human populations. The most active volcano in Alaska's Aleutian Arc is Pavlof (elevation 2,519 m), which poses a serious risk to air travel because it is located along a major flight path between North America and East Asia; St. Helens (elevation 2,549 m), which is famous for its devastating 1980 eruption, is still active today; there are also a large number of historically active volcanoes, most of which are centered in the Aleutian arc and Hawaii.

Irrigated Land

  • 102,872 Square Miles

  • 266,440 Square Kilometers

Environmental problems

Environmental problems include air pollution that causes acid rain in the US and Canada, the burning of fossil fuels in the US, water pollution from pesticides and fertilizers, and the country's limited natural freshwater resources in much of the west, which calls for careful management, and desertification.
