Misuse of the funds of Mid-day meals in Kalikot

In order to guarantee students in community schools receive a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and combat malnutrition, the mid-day meal program was launched in 2017. The approach has also been useful in getting students to attend class regularly. However, the majority of the target population lacks access to these amenities. The government also offers scholarships to the kids of those in need.

With this scheme, the government aims to provide a nutritious diet to children and control malnutrition in the province. The programme is also expected to reduce absenteeism among students in rural areas. The community school mid-day meal programme is being run in 42 out of 77 districts in the country. However, most of the community schools in remote areas have redirected the amount for mid-day meals to manage the salary of the teachers.

In the most recent fiscal year, Tilagupha Municipality distributed Rs 18 million for the mid-day meal program. According to deputy mayor Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, a total of Rs 26 million has been made available for the program in the current year. In order to prevent educational institutions from spending money on teacher wages, he encouraged the government to manage the number of teaching positions in the classrooms.
